Paris Olympics: Simone Biles’ teammate Jordan Chiles could lose bronze over 4-second gaffe
- A US appeal had seen the gymnast overtake her Romanian rival and win a medal but a ruling from CAS has reinstated the original standing
United States gymnast Jordan Chiles has removed herself from social media to protect her mental health after a ruling from the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) could see her lose her bronze medal.
Chiles initially finished fifth in the women’s floor exercise with a score of 13.666 and Romania’s Ana Barbosu in the bronze medal position with 13.7000.
But an appeal from Team USA coach Cecile Landi saw Chiles’ score bumped up by one, meaning she overtook Barbosu.
At the time, Romanian prime minister Marcel Ciolacu called it a “scandalous situation” and said he would boycott the Olympic closing ceremony.
However, the new result has been voided and the initial standing restored.
The Romanian Gymnastics Federation asked CAS to review the procedure surrounding the US appeal, which had to be made within 60 seconds of the score being posted.
