For China, Friday was a day for picking up some medals and booking others in to be collected a later date at the Paris Olympics.
The country’s athletes, won shooting bronze and diving gold, and progressed to finals in badminton and table tennis.
World champion Zhang Qiongyue got things started by winning bronze in the women’s 50-metres rifle three positions scoring 452.9.
Switzerland’s Leone Chiara won gold, hitting an Olympic record of 464.4, with the USA’s Sagen Maddalena hitting 463 for silver.
Competing at her first games, Zhang said she had to focus on keeping her cool.

“Actually, in such circumstances, I forgot what the score was and my whole concentration was on my movements,” the 20-year-old said. “Maybe I made some mistakes, but I had to focus on staying calm and being steady.
“It’s such a big event. I have not taken part in many events like this. I needed this type of experience. Back home we have good training. My teammates helped me prepare for a big event like this, so I was able to stay calm.”
Long Daoyi and Wang Zongyuan continued China’s gold medal sweep in diving competitions. The pair scored 446.10 in the men’s synchronised 3m springboard final, followed closely by Mexico’s Juan Celaya and Osmar Olvera, who earned 444.03.
An upset looked to be on the cards for a brief moment, with Celaya and Olvera capitalising on two poor dives from the Chinese duo, briefly taking the lead in the fourth round. Going into the sixth and final dive, they needed 96.84 from the judges for gold, but could only manage 94.77.
Great Britain’s Anthony Harding and Jack Laugher earned bronze with 438.15.
“We’ve never had such a passionate, thrilling and difficult competition before. This is our first time facing such a challenge,” Wang told reporters.
“We made some mistakes but I was telling him [Long] to find himself and just perform at his normal levels, telling him there is nothing to be afraid of.”
In table tennis, world No 2 Chen Meng progressed from the women’s semi-finals with a straight-sets victory over South Korea’s Shin Yu-bin.
Three hours later, China’s Sun Yingsha, the world No 1, beat Japan’s Hina Hayata in the other semi, also 4-0.
Chen and Sun will meet in the women’s final tomorrow at 8.30pm, marking the seventh time since its Olympic debut in 1988 that the final has been played against two Chinese athletes.
As for the men’s singles, the sole remaining Chinese competitor, Fan Zhendong beat France’s Felix Lebrun 4-0 to set up his second consecutive Olympic final, having won gold in Tokyo.
He will face Sweden’s Truls Moregard, who pulled off a surprise victory over world No 1 Wang Chuqin in the round of 32. The final is on Sunday at 8.30pm.
Friday started with China progressing to the final in the women’s badminton doubles, which will also be an all-China affair.
In the first semi-final, No 1 seed Chen Qingchen and Jia Yifan overcame Malaysia’s Pearly Tan and Thinaah Muralitharan 2-1.
Liu Shengshu and Tan Ning are the other finalists. They beat Japan’s Nami Matsuyama and Chiharu Shida 2-0.
Men’s doubles team Liang Weikeng and Wang Chang will face Lee Yang and Wang Chi-lin of Chinese Taipei in the gold medal match after the Chinese beat Malaysia’s Aaron Chia and Soh Wooi-yik 2-1.
