Hong Kong has had Olympic heroes before, but not like these three. All elite in their own special way, they have captured the public’s imagination over the past few days, getting the city’s Olympics off to a flying start, with two gold medals and a bronze.

From thrilling fencing wins for Cheung Ka-long and Vivian Kong Man-wai, to Siobhan Haughey’s see-saw battle with the world’s best swimmers, they embody the Hong Kong spirit we all so value.

Cheung Ka-long (gold – fencing)
Behind this double Olympic champion’s considered exterior and love of expensive jewellery lies a steely determination and never-say-die attitude that has etched his name in history. Just don’t call him Edgar.
Vivian Kong Man-wai (gold – fencing)
The woman all women want to be, and the one all mothers hope their children bring home, this self-confessed ‘horrible friend’ has the same determination to succeed as other winners, it’s just hidden behind a slightly nerdy outer layer.
Siobhan Haughey (bronze - 100m, 200m freestyle)
Realising she could be a champion changed this star’s future. The smiley face and approachable personality gives way to a singular focus in the pool that has not only left her dripping with medals, but also a healthy dose of Chanel.
