Paris Olympics: can Cheung, Haughey give Hong Kong a magic Monday? 5 to watch on day 3
- Table tennis’ Doo Hoi-kem could earn a slice of Hong Kong history first, while Roland-Garros hosts Djokovic v Nadal
Magic Monday? Medal Monday? Hong Kong will hope one of those phrases applies after day three of the Paris Olympics.
It’s a day stacked with the city’s biggest hitters. Both of its flag-bearers, in fact, in the shape of Cheung Ka-long and Siobhan Haughey.
Fencer Cheung may, by the early hours of Tuesday back home, be on the podium again, having stood on its top step when winning gold at the last Games in Tokyo three years ago.
Almost simultaneously, swimmer Haughey will aim to achieve similar by adding to her two Tokyo silvers in the 200 metres freestyle.
Yet it may be neither who becomes the first Hongkonger to win a medal at consecutive Games. Table tennis player Doo Hoi-kem could beat them to it when she and Wong Chun-ting play in the mixed doubles semi-finals. She won team bronze last time.
