Swimmers from China were the most tested athletes in the lead-up to the Paris Olympics with an average of 21 anti-doping tests each – almost four times as much as their US counterparts, World Aquatics (WA) has confirmed.

The update was published in a written report by the organisation, just days after Chinese internet users expressed anger over perceived “unfair treatment” following the announcement of the news by a member of the support staff.

WA said it had carried out a total 418 tests on all 31 Chinese swimmers since January 1, 2024, with an average of 13 tests per athlete.

“All Chinese swimmers have been tested out-of-competition at least eight times by World Aquatics, independently of any other anti-doping organisation and using a WADA-accredited laboratory based in Europe,” the organisation wrote in the report.

“Including tests conducted by other anti-doping organisations, Chinese swimmers have been tested on average 21 times since January 1, 2024.”

The organisation also published results from the other nine largest swimming delegations at the Games, which open on Friday.
