Outdoor bouldering spots in Hong Kong for climbers looking for a new challenge
- Gym-goers are stuck for climbing spots as all facilities are shut, but this might be the perfect time to transition outdoors
Hong Kong’s bouldering gyms are shut because of the coronavirus and indoor climbers are wondering where they will get their fix. But in troubled times comes opportunity and this might be the perfect chance to transition from indoor bouldering to outdoors.
Bouldering is climbing at a low height, typically with only a few moves. Without rope work to think about, or fatigue, you can push your technical ability to the max. And there are some great spots in Hong Kong to get started. All you need is your climbing shoes, though it is recommended that you have a climbing mat for safety, too.
Shek O
There are a few popular spots just a short walk from the village, each with wonderful sea views. The proximity to the sea will keep you cool too in the hot summer sun.
Walk to the end of Shek O Headland Road. When the buildings end and the path turns left towards the headland, you will see several boulders on your right. These are called the Village Boulders.
Wonder around and check out the Training Wall, the Cube Circuit, the Backside and more. Typically, there are other boulderers hanging around with their mats at the base of each problem, willing to share the space and the padding, along with beta.
