Hong Kong’s rising triathlon stars urged to chase senior glory, National Games targeted
Hong Kong win two gold medals and one silver at Asian under-23 event, athletes set for China national championships this weekend
Hong Kong head coach Andrew Wright has challenged the city’s triathletes to convert a series of excellent age-group results into senior success over the coming Olympic cycle.
After Robin Elg retained his men’s title at the Asia Triathlon Junior, U23 & Mixed Relay Championships on Saturday, there was more joy in Saudi Arabia the following day, when Hong Kong’s quartet dashed to mixed-relay gold for a second straight year.
For the redoubtable Elg, who was the only surviving member of Hong Kong’s 2023 champion team, the relay success planted him on top of the podium for the second time in as many days. The triumphant foursome was completed by Cade Wright and Tallulah Wright, second and sixth, respectively, in the women’s individual race, and Yip Tak-long, who finished seventh in the men’s race.
“Other than for Robin, who won [the relay] last year, this is a big result for the athletes and will set them up with a lot of confidence for next year,” Wright said.
“It’s also great for our programme that we are starting to show consistency at junior level. That needs to translate into senior results over the next few years.”
Cade Wright is expected to compete in this weekend’s China national championships, which will draw a line under the squad’s 2024 season.
