Paris Olympics: Hong Kong cyclist Ceci Lee set for twin Games assault, Lau gets road race spot
- Lee will compete on the road and the track, while Vincent Lau has been named as the city’s entrant in the men’s road race
Ceci Lee Sze-wing will fight on two Olympic fronts, after it was confirmed the star Hong Kong cyclist would add the road race to her omnium commitments in Paris.
The Hong Kong men’s road race spot has been handed to Vincent Lau Wan-yau, who said he would have his work cut out to complete the undulating 273-kilometre course.
Lee accelerated her Games preparations with a series of fine performances at the recent Six Days of Fiorenzuola in Italy. She won the scratch title, and was runner-up in the points and elimination disciplines, alongside finishing third in the omnium.
The Hong Kong team has been at its training camp in Brittany, in northern France, since July 5. Herve Dagorne, the head coach, has engineered a partnership between the local cycling association and their French counterparts, enabling Hong Kong cyclists to take part in a series of races over the coming weeks.
Lee will tackle the 158km Olympic road race on August 4. She is poised to move inside the velodrome for the omnium on the Games’ closing day, exactly one week later.
Dagorne had championed Lee’s road race selection, after revealing continuing psychological demons were stalling the rider’s track progress.
