World snooker champion Kyren Wilson on breaking the ‘Crucible curse’ – and going for blue
With eight ranking tournament titles to his name, Wilson wants to make history by retaining world crown – and to keep winning for his kids
World No 2 snooker player Kyren Wilson has long been a Chelsea fan, seduced into the fold by the colour blue and the undoubted skills of Gianfranco Zola and the magic feet of Eden Hazard. But there is no debate when asked to name his favourite player of all.
Italian Zola was the one “who got me into Chelsea”, said Wilson, who started following the Blues when still a schoolboy. “He was really quick, lots of skilful touches, and I was just fascinated with him.”
“In recent years,” he added, “I loved watching Eden Hazard: an amazing, skilful player. If it wasn’t for him, Chelsea wouldn’t have won so much in recent years.”
But the main man, said the 33-year-old from Kettering, was a fellow Englishman.
“John Terry, obviously: the captain for many, many years, leader of the team, and one of the best defenders, I think, ever in the Premier League. So, yeah, [my all-time favourite player] would have to be Terry.”
World champion Wilson followed in his dad’s footsteps and became a Chelsea fan when Gianluca Vialli managed the team in the late 1990s.
