Hong Kong triathlete Oscar Coggins sets ‘big goal’ for China’s National Games in 2025
Tokyo Olympian says city’s triathlon squad is strongest he has known, reveals training changes in bid for peak performance
Oscar Coggins has identified National Games glory as his “big goal” for next year, but says he will need to remain on his “A game” to earn selection from an increasingly competitive Hong Kong triathlon field.
The city’s squad delivered a show of strength at last month’s Chinese National Triathlon Championships, where a relay quartet featuring Coggins, but missing the likes of Jason Ng Tai-long and Charley Hall, claimed bronze.
At last year’s Asian Games, the relay team managed bronze despite being stripped of key components Coggins and Hilda Choi Yan-yin days before the race.
“In previous Asian Games, we wouldn’t have got a medal in those circumstances, so that was a really positive sign” Coggins told the Post.
“We have a huge line of people clamouring to be in the relay team, and any of those [who were missing] could have been swapped in without harming our performance.
“It’s the strongest [I’ve known Hong Kong triathlon], and the more internal pressure we have, the better for people needing to be on their ‘A’ games to qualify [for National Games team].”
