American squash star Amanda Sobhy says she had been “liberated” after opening up about suffering with an eating disorder, and the 31-year-old wants to use her platform to “help and inspire people”.

Five-time national champion Sobhy did not feature in the US’ World Squash Team Championships (WSTC) final against Egypt at Hong Kong Football Club on Sunday night, after her third rubber became redundant when the African team won the opening two games to secure their fourth straight title.

In 2021, Sobhy disclosed she had overcome the “binge eating, bulimia and disordered eating” that blighted her for almost a decade.

“I wanted to show the world athletes have our struggles, too,” Sobhy told the Post. “People see only our surface level: the results and podiums.

“I felt so alone and isolated [when unwell] and didn’t want anyone else to feel that way. I didn’t only share my story to take back the last bit of power [from the illness], but also to help others.”

Sobhy said that at the height of her illness she thought it was something she “would be stuck with for the rest of my life”.
