The 11th seed potted the 15 reds as well as the black 15 times and then all the colours in order before receiving a standing ovation from the York Barbican crowd.

“This is my third time making a maximum and this time it just felt different as the UK Championship is a big event so I’m just very happy,” Zhang said.

“I opened the reds so well and then I knew I could make it. It was just very exciting, my heart was beating so quickly.”

The 147 came at a good time for Zhang as he was trailing Lei 2-1 ahead of the midsession interval. And, following the break, he marched on with victories in four of the next five frames to claim the win.

The 32-year-old will now face England’s Stuart Bingham, who produced a sensational comeback from 5-2 down to win 6-5 against Mark Williams, in the last-16.
