Explorer who spent two years walking across Africa takes on Hong Kong’s Moontrekker
Mario Rigby is taking part to advocate for nature and sustainability, and as training for his bid to tackle the world’s seven tallest summits
Explorer Mario Rigby, who spent two years walking across Africa, will take on the Barclays Moontrekker this weekend in Hong Kong as part of his quest to advocate for nature conservancy and sustainable development.
Rigby is also running the trail event – in which participants race against the sunrise on Hong Kong’s Lantau Island – as part of his training to become one of just a handful of people to have tackled the world’s seven tallest summits.
The annual Moontrekker event is an overnight trail run and hike where competitors race against the sunrise on Hong Kong’s Lantau Island.
This year’s event, which starts on Friday night, will see the launch of the shortened 20-kilometre route, which does not summit Lantau Peak, Hong Kong’s second-highest mountain. Rigby is running the 30km race, while there is also a 40km route.
“If I look at a project, I have to fall in love with it, and I have to feel some sort of fear,” Rigby said. “For me, running 30km is fearful because I’ve never gone this distance before. I’ve walked it multiple times, but I’ve never run it.”
