Paris Olympics: Siobhan Haughey leads Hong Kong swimming team, athletes to ‘cherish’ Games
- Ian Ho and Cindy Cheung have qualified for individual events, with Adam Chillingworth aiming for swim of a lifetime to join team in Paris
Siobhan Haughey will lead a Hong Kong swimming team featuring at least seven athletes at the Paris Olympics, after the local association confirmed the squad on Wednesday.
Neither Adam Chillingworth nor Hayden Kwan made the initial cut. Both men will have final chances to book their seats on the plane when they swim at the Sette Colli Trophy meeting in Italy this week.
Haughey is in stupendous form heading to her third Olympics. A double silver medallist in Tokyo three years ago, she won the world 200 metres freestyle title in February.
More recently, Haughey dominated the three-leg European Mare Nostrum swim tour in her favoured 100m and 200m events. She is poised to swim the 50m, 100m, 200m, and 400m freestyle, in addition to the 100m breaststroke, in the French capital.
Ian Ho Yentou will compete in the men’s 50m freestyle, the discipline in which he won silver at last year’s Asian Games. Cindy Cheung Sum-yuet, who will turn 18 during the Games, is poised to race in the women’s 200m backstroke.
The make-up of Hong Kong’s relay teams is still to be determined. Camille Cheng Lily-mei, Natalie Kan Cheuk-tung, Tam Hoi-lam, and Stephanie Au Hoi-shun, the 32-year-old who is retiring following the Olympics, have all been named in the squad.
