World Aquatics Championships: Hong Kong’s Siobhan Haughey into 100m breaststroke final and 200m freestyle semis in Doha
- Haughey reaches the semi-finals of the 200m freestyle, one of her favoured races, as she looks to add to last year’s silver medal in the 100m
- She then competes in the final of the 100m breaststroke in the early hours of Wednesday
Hong Kong’s Siobhan Haughey has begun her hunt for gold at the World Aquatics Championships in Qatar, qualifying from the 200 metres freestyle heats on Tuesday while preparing for the 100m breaststroke final in the early hours of Wednesday.
In the 200m freestyle, one of her favoured races, Haughey came second in her heat, finishing 0.2 seconds behind Hungary’s Nikolett Padar.
That qualified her fourth-fastest overall for the semi-finals, with China’s Li Bingjie going through fastest. The semi-finals were due to take place at 1.13am Hong Kong time on Wednesday and the final is scheduled for 12.17am on Thursday.
Just 32 minutes after the freestyle semi-finals, Haughey was due to feature in the 100m breaststroke final at 1.45am on Wednesday.
The freestyle specialist earned her place in that final by finishing second in her semi-final behind Tes Schouten of the Netherlands in the early hours of Tuesday to qualify fifth-fastest overall.
Last year, Haughey won Hong Kong’s first-ever medal at these championships, picking up silver in the 100m freestyle in Fukuoka, Japan.
