Hong Kong 100m record holder Ng Ka-fung has praised the influence of Chinese sprinter Su Bingtian, as he looks to go even faster at the Asian Games in September.

The pair are training together in Shenzhen, and Ng said he was constantly learning from Su, the fastest man in Asia, who became the first athlete from the region in 89 years to make the final of the men’s 100m at the Tokyo Olympics.

Ng said Su, who he calls “big brother”, was taking great care of him during their time together at Shenzhen Sports School in Longgang and had a “good character”.

Both sprinters are working together as a result of a partnership between the Hong Kong Association of Athletics Affiliates and the Chinese Athletics Association, with Ng starting his training in mainland China in early February.

Although Randy Huntington, Su’s American coach, has remained in the United States, and the training camp was closed last Saturday because of a rise in the number of Covid-19 cases across the border, Ng said he had benefited a lot in just three weeks.

“Whether Randy is there or not doesn’t affect me much, I’m thankful that at my age, plus I’ve been injured [chronic Achilles tendon injury on both legs] for five years, but now I’m well, and I have ‘big brother’ to guide me every day,” said the 29-year-old, who is now in close-camp training with Su.

“If I have any running problems, he always takes the initiative to teach me.”
