The 1993 Disney film of the same name tells the story of Jamaica’s 1988 Winter Olympic bobsleigh team capturing the watching world’s hearts.

It is the full extent of the knowledge of many people when it comes to tropical and warmer weather nations at the Winter Games.

Though it might come as a shock, there are plenty more examples of unexpected competitors proving that not growing up surrounded by snow and ice is no obstacle to reaching the peak of winter sports – and Beijing 2022 (February 4-20) is set to be no different.

The Philippines set the snowball rolling in 1972 when they sent two skiers to Japan to compete at the Sapporo Games. Juan Cipriano and Ben Nanasca made history without troubling the medal table in the slalom and giant slalom.
