The sporting world has not only provided fertile ground for documentary makers but it has proved the inspiration for plenty of big screen success.
This was certainly the case during the last decade, where sports stories again troubled decision makers in Oscars season.
Our only criteria in picking the films of the decade was that they were all “based on a true story”. That means no place for minor league hockey enforcer comedy Goon or Tom Hardy’s MMA skills in Warrior.
Nor is there any room for the many boxing based films, that while being believable enough in the case of Journeyman to predicate Michael Bisping’s retirement from the UFC, were not based on real lives.
There is also no place for Creed, the first film to make the Rocky franchise relevant for decades, nor Jake Gylenhall in Southpaw.
Here, in chronological order of release from the beginning of the decade, is our look back at the 10 best biopics of the 2010s.
