Racer Andersson can’t wait to bring FIA World Rallycross Championships to Hong Kong’s streets
- Final event of the season will take drivers past Observation Wheel, City Hall and Victoria Harbour on specially built circuit
- Event will run across weekend of November 11 and 12, with Klara Andersson calling prospect of racing in city ‘really special’
Swedish rally driver Klara Andersson cannot wait to swap gravel tracks in forests for a chance to race among the landmarks of Hong Kong’s iconic harbourfront next month.
The FIA World Rallycross Championships take place in the city over two days, pitting Andersson, the only woman in the standings, against up to 10 other drivers in the heart of Hong Kong Island.
A specially built one kilometre track will wind its way around Central, taking in the Observation Wheel, Hong Kong City Hall, and an area close to the promenade running alongside Victoria Harbour.
“It’s my first time in Asia and also a first time to race in a city centre,” the 23-year-old said. “I think it’s amazing. We are to race on a track that is only around one kilometre and as an audience you can see the whole track at the same time.
“The first thing you notice about this track is the venue and the beautiful views, it’s something we have never seen.
“Usually, it’s a landscape and it’s a lot of trees, but now we have these amazing, astonishing buildings, and the Ferris wheel. It’s mixed surfaces and we have everything so I think it’s a great fit, I am just really excited.”
The current championship, which started in June, has already included races in Portugal, Norway, Sweden and South Africa, leaving only the final stage in Hong Kong to conclude the season.
Andersson, who has earned 50 points from five races to sit seventh in the standings, called the prospect of building a track from scratch in Hong Kong “really cool because it hasn’t been done before in Rallycross”.
