UFC commentator Joe Rogan has weighed in on “super jacked” Conor McGregor’s recent muscle gain, and why he thinks the former two-weight champion has largely struggled in the Octagon since his crowning glory five years ago.

Rogan and his guests Ari Shaffir and Tony Hinchcliffe had been analysing McGregor’s historic featherweight and lightweight title wins against Jose Aldo in December 2015, and Eddie Alvarez a year later, on the latest episode of his podcast, The Joe Rogan Experience.

Shaffir then asked Rogan “what happened to [McGregor]” with the Irishman having since lost three of his last four fights in the Octagon, following a defeat in a money-spinning boxing match with American superstar Floyd Mayweather.

“Fights happened to him,” Rogan said. “And then also a s*** tonne of money, and then also some time out of the game when he was doing the Floyd Mayweather thing.

“I’m sure just doing boxing … If you’re gonna train for a giant US$100 million fight, you’re most likely not going to do any MMA sparring or anything. He probably just did that for a while.

“And then you get that money. What’s that Marvin Hagler quote about [how] ‘it’s hard to get up at five in the morning and go running when you’re sleeping in silk sheets’. I think that’s the phrase.”
