UFC 261: Kamaru Usman knocks Jorge Masvidal out cold to retain title, warns ‘I’m still getting better’
- ‘The Nigerian Nightmare’ hands Masvidal his first KO defeat in the UFC in shocking finish to dramatic event
- ‘Jacksonville, Florida, you all said you wanted violence, you’re welcome,’ welterweight champ Usman says
Kamaru Usman retained his welterweight title in stunning fashion by knocking Jorge Masvidal out cold in the second round of their UFC 261 main event on Saturday night.
After the pair had traded big shots in the stand-up during a back-and-forth first round, “The Nigerian Nightmare” (19-1) loaded up a huge right hand to sleep “Gamebred” (35-15), whose whole body went limp.
Masvidal tried to get up but Usman put his lights out for good with more hammerfists at 1:02 of the second round.
“Jacksonville, Florida, you all said you wanted violence, you’re welcome,” Usman said in his post-fight interview with Joe Rogan inside the Octagon.
Usman, who was expected to grapple again as he did in his unanimous decision victory over Masvidal at UFC 251 last July, displayed just how far his striking has come on, especially since switching his training camp from Sanford MMA under Henri Hooft to Denver under Trevor Wittman.
