UFC: Alistair Overeem admits ‘I’m getting too old for this’ in race against time for heavyweight title
- ‘Everything until 42 is good,’ says the 40-year-old Overeem ahead of return vs Alexander Volkov
- Legendary Dutchman sees Anderson Silva’s decline as a cautionary tale – ‘I just don’t think that’s the way to go’
Former Strikeforce, Dream and K-1 heavyweight champion Alistair Overeem is coming to the tail end of an illustrious career.
When he steps into the Octagon at UFC Vegas 18 for his main event clash with Alexander Volkov (32-8,) he’ll be seeking his 48th win in professional MMA.
Riding a two-fight win streak, with four wins from his last five bouts, the No 5-ranked heavyweight is hoping to secure a glorious ending to his UFC tenure.
“I’m still improving. Still getting better. It would be nice to get a win over Volkov, and inch evermore closer to the title shot,” Overeem told SCMP MMA. “Because to be honest, I’m getting too old for this. So, we’ve got to hustle. We’ve got to close it out.”
At 40-years-old, Overeem (47-18, one no contest) is the second-oldest fighter in the top 10 of the UFC’s heavyweight rankings.
