There are inevitabilities in sport, much like life. LeBron James leading the Los Angeles Lakers over the Miami Heat to capture the franchise’s 17th title felt like one. Rafael Nadal winning his 13th French Open, even over Novak Djokovic, did too.

Which brings us to the UFC world, where next weekend as well, reigning undefeated Russian Khabib Nurmagomedov (28-0) defending his lightweight championship over Justin Gaethje (22-2) feels like an inevitability.

Or does it?

The sporting world in 2020 has been thrown through the pandemic storm, come out the other side and produced leagues without fans inside bubbles. But so far, from the small sample size we’ve been given, things have tended to stick to the script.

The Lakers, favoured to win the NBA crown, did just that. The NHL’s Tampa Bay Lightning, favourites going into their play-off bubble, won as well. Sporting stars like Nadal, James and even Tom Brady, who has found new life with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers at 43, look just like they did before the coronavirus swept across the globe.
