Colby Covington’s comments in the lead-up to, and after, his UFC Vegas 11 TKO victory over Tyron Woodley did not bring enough scrutiny from the media, according to Israel Adesanya.

The UFC middleweight champ took aim at the press for not bringing the outspoken welterweight challenger to task for calling the Black Lives Matter movement a “domestic terrorist organisation” and NBA star LeBron James a “spineless coward” for supporting it.

After receiving a phone call from US President Donald Trump on ESPN’s post-fight broadcast, the 32-year-old American Covington (16-2) made disparaging remarks to welterweight champ “The Nigerian Nightmare” Kamaru Usman (17-1).

“Who did you get a call from? Did you get a call from, freaking, your little tribe? Did they give you some smoke signals for you?” Covington said. “You’re a joke, Marty Fakenewsman!”

ESPN deleted a clip of the exchange from its official MMA Twitter account.

UFC president Dana White defended Covington, saying “nobody is about free speech more than we are”, but Adesanya believes he was treated much worse for a joke about September 11 in the build-up to his first title defence against Yoel Romero this year.
