After scoring a fifth-round TKO over former champ Tyron Woodley (19-6-1) in Saturday night’s heated UFC Vegas 11 main event, Covington (16-2) cut a post-fight promo criticising “woke athlete” James as a “spineless coward”.

The comment from the 32-year-old American, who is an ardent Donald Trump supporter and received a phone call from the US president live during the post-event show broadcast on ESPN, was seemingly in reference to Los Angeles Lakers star James’ support of the Black Lives Matter movement, which Covington insists is a “domestic terrorist” organisation.

Speaking at the virtual press conference after the Lakers’ game two win over the Denver Nuggets in the Western Conference Finals on Sunday night, James seemingly responded to Covington’s words.

“You put that pressure on yourself when you don’t really care about what other people think, because what other people think doesn’t really matter. They don’t understand,” James said.

“Anybody can talk from outside, but if they got into the ring, or they got into the arena, probably 10 times out of 10 they’d s*** their pants.”
