Former UFC light heavyweight and heavyweight champion Cormier (22-2, one no contest) also called fellow Lafayette, Louisiana-born Poirier the “second best lightweight in the division” after he beat Dan Hooker via unanimous decision at UFC Vegas 4 last Saturday.
“The Diamond” Poirier (26-6, one no contest) had jokingly told ESPN’s Ariel Helwani to “let me rest” after the reporter said he should next fight Tony Ferguson (25-4), who lost to Justin Gaethje via fifth-round TKO in May.
“I like that Dustin told you to chill because the Tony Ferguson fight is just another one of those fights,” the 41-year-old Cormier said on Ariel Helwani’s MMA Show.
“It’s a great fight ... it’s gonna get him where he needs to be to earn another title shot, but for people that know Dustin, we’d prefer to see something different.”
