Last year’s UFC fighter of the year Jorge Masvidal has once again hit out at the promotion after president Dana White said the Cuban-American is “very much like the Diaz brothers” in that “he beats to the sound of his own drum”.

“Gamebred” Masvidal (35-13), who this month asked the UFC to release him before likening it to being in a “communist regime”, has gone back-and-forth with White over fighter pay, saying he wants a bigger share of the “revenue stream”.
White responded by saying “you can say what you want, but I have a deal”, revealing Masvidal had signed a new “seven-fight” contract less than a year ago. At the UFC Fight Night post-fight press conference on Saturday, White explained why welterweight Gilbert Burns leapfrogged the 35-year-old Masvidal for a title shot against Kamaru Usman scheduled for UFC 251 on Fight Island next month.

“People who wanna fight get fights, and people who don’t don’t. [Burns is] the number one guy in the world, number one vs champion. And this kid wants to stay busy. These kids that come out and go on runs like Burns is on and stay active and healthy, it’s the smartest thing you could do,” he said.

“Masvidal is very much like the Diaz brothers [Nate and Nick]. He beats to the sound of his own drum. When he wants to do something he does it. It’s not very surprising at all ... if you wanna fight, call us. We’ll offer you fights and if you don’t wanna take them, you don’t have to. It’s always been that way.”
