UFC: Leon Edwards says Tyron Woodley is ‘running’ and ‘doesn’t want to fight me’ any more
- ‘Not once has he called my name since the fight was postponed, he’s been calling out everyone else,’ Edwards says
- ‘He’s getting up there in age, I think he knows that – if I beat him, where does he go?’
Leon Edwards didn’t think it would be easy to earn a UFC title shot, but he didn’t expect it to be so difficult, either.
Edwards, who hails from Birmingham, England, is now on an eight-fight win streak in the perilous welterweight division, but has yet to earn the opportunity to fight for gold.
“When I first came into the UFC, I would have thought the more you win, the closer you get to a title shot,” Edwards told the Post. “Now I’ve realised it’s not about wins. You get guys fighting for world titles coming off losses. The sport’s in a very weird place. Wins don’t mean everything.”
After close to six years in the UFC, it looked like Edwards would have the chance to secure his title shot earlier this year when he was set to battle the former champ Tyron Woodley in the main event of the promotion’s planned March 21 stop in London. Regrettably, this event was ultimately cancelled because of the coronavirus.
Edwards admits the card’s cancellation was tough on him.
