UFC: Jorge Masvidal would ‘hurry’ to fight Khabib Nurmagomedov at 155 pounds if the ‘moolah talks’

Jorge Masvidal says he would “hurry” to drop down to fight UFC lightweight champion Khabib Nurmagomedov if he is “rewarded handsomely” for it.

Fighter of the year Masvidal (35-13) is on a three-fight win streak having beaten Darren Till, Ben Askren and Nate Diaz in the 170-pound welterweight division last year. Khabib, meanwhile, is waiting for president Dana White to announce a replacement location for his 155-pound title defence against Tony Ferguson in April.

“The moolah’s gonna talk, man,” said the 35-year-old Masvidal on his personal YouTube channel in response to a fan’s question about challenging Khabib. “155 is such a battle with my weight. Once I’m at 170 to 173 pounds, I’m at five or six per cent body fat already. So I don’t have a lot of room to play with to still get to 155. It’s a lot of water, it’s always been a lot of water.

“That doesn’t leave me the night of the fight in the best shape that I could be, like how I compete at 170 and have that explosion. I can explode a little bit more and for longer. At 155 it would be a little different.”

Prior to his ascent to promotional stardom, Masvidal had competed in several lightweight division fights, including wins over Yves Edwards and Michael Chiesa. He has not fought at lightweight since losing to Al Iaquinta in 2015.
