The Takedown | UFC: Dana White needs to hit pause on Khabib vs Conor McGregor rematch
- A venomous rematch with Khabib Nurmagomedov is definitely on the cards for the UFC, but why the rush?
- There’s no harm in ‘The Notorious’ notching a few more crowd-pleasing (and lucrative) TKO wins in 2020 first
Halfway through Dana White’s UFC 246 press conference last weekend, he laid it out in typical Dana White fashion. A reporter had been grilling him on who should step in if Khabib Nurmagomedov or Tony Ferguson drops out of UFC 249 on April 19 – Conor McGregor or Justin Gaethje?
The question stemmed from who would be best suited to fight McGregor next and which would draw the most attention. White then pointed to a guy working a camera at the press conference at T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas and delivered a deadpan response.
“Conor McGregor and this guy right here with the camera is a huge fight,” he said to laughter from the media.
White has never minced words and his UFC 246 post-fight press conference was filled with comedic gold zingers and juicy nuggets of intel on a number of MMA hot topics. One of the most tantalising was McGregor’s desire, and the UFC president’s willingness, to get Nurmagomedov back in the Octagon for a bloody, vicious and lucrative rematch.
White outlined how McGregor felt out of place against the Russian in late 2018, with a host of personal issues and injuries rendering him less than 100 per cent, all of which seem to be visions of the past as we are introduced to Conor McGregor: version 2.0.
