Zhang fought for the strawweight kickboxing belt in 2022 but lost by decision to Jonathan Di Bella.

Since then, he has won two of his three fights, with each going the distance, and will be looking for a third victory by beating Sam-A at ONE 169.

Sam-A won the strawweight kickboxing title in 2019 but never got to defend it and vacated the belt in 2022. He has spent most of his career competing in Muay Thai, winning numerous titles, and is still going strong at the age of 41.

The winner of the fight could be one of the top contenders to face champion Prajanchai PKSaenchaigym, who won the title with victory over Di Bella earlier this year.

Also added to the card at ONE 169, which had originally been scheduled for Atlanta, was a lightweight MMA bout that will feature a bout for the submission grappling belt. Champion Kade Ruotolo, competing in the sport for just the second time, has been matched with the more experienced Ahmed Mujtaba.
