Head coach Herve Dagorne said an “aggressive” Ceci Lee Sze-wing had taken a significant psychological step forwards after the gifted Hongkonger won the AusCycling National Omnium Championships in Melbourne.

Lee has historically struggled to pair her natural talent with the belief she could compete with the world’s leading riders.

But four months after dissolving into tears following a poor omnium performance at the Paris Olympics, a brasher and braver Lee stunned the hosts with a fabulous display of riding to steal their national title from under their noses.

Frenchman Dagorne has acknowledged that the task of releasing Lee from her self-imposed shackles is among the largest challenges of his long and decorated coaching career.

After watching the 23-year-old strike gold Down Under, he told the Post: “Ceci made big improvements in this race. She was better technically and strategically, with her choice of position on the track, and her behaviour was aggressive.

“She feels like she is stronger, but that is just because she made the right decisions and was offensive.
