Hong Kong’s lacrosse chief says the annual World Lacrosse Super Sixes will serve as a testing ground for Los Angeles 2028, given the format has been included in the Olympic Games roster.

Raymond Fong Kong said this format would now become the organisation’s priority and that both the men’s and women’s teams would be given plenty of overseas exposure ahead of the inaugural Sixes World Championships, which makes its debut in 2027.

“[They will play at] not only the other two Super Sixes series [in Canada and Germany] but also some other bigger tournaments around the world,” said Fong, the chief executive of the Hong Kong, China Lacrosse Association. “There are also some competitions in the United Kingdom that have not been open to overseas teams in the past.

“We want our players to play against the top teams more so that they will improve and get more experience.”

Fong added that there would be “substantial” costs to fund the overseas trips for the city’s women’s and men’s representative teams, who are both going through a transition period after their respective world championships in 2022 and 2023.

“It won’t be easy for us [financially] but that’s what we are determined to do. Sixes became the focus of every nation and team now that it is included in the Los Angeles Games,” he said.
