Li Na says players ‘loved’ Hong Kong Open, calls for improvements to Victoria Park
The Chinese two-time grand slam champion, who was tournament director this year, says players were very well taken care of
Chinese tennis legend Li Na praised the improvements made in the organisation of the Prudential Hong Kong Tennis Open and said that players “loved this event”.
However, she reiterated calls for the decades-old Victoria Park to undergo a makeover.
Li, who won the French Open in 2011 before adding the Australian Open three years later, was appointed tournament director for this year’s WTA 250 event in the city, and said this gave her the opportunity to have a different view of proceedings.
“I would always come to Hong Kong as a player, and with a different role this time, I have a bit more perspective,” she said. “The last [125] event was already very good but everything has become better.
“It’s full of tennis elements everywhere, and the fans can feel it. I had a lot of opportunities to talk to the players and they all loved this event.
“They were being taken care of in every possible way, allowing them to compete in a stress-free and comfortable environment. I hope they will come back to Hong Kong, and that’s our goal as the organiser, too.”
