Hong Kong’s most successful athlete, Siobhan Haughey, walked away from the Swimming World Cup on Saturday with more than US$60,000 (HK$466,000) in her pocket.
Haughey was the third-best athlete in Shanghai and Incheon but ranked sixth overall in Singapore, largely down to finishing second in the 100-metres freestyle, which denied her a clean sweep of that event.
Haughey was crowned queen of the 200m after she won the event at all three World Cup stops, but with World Aquatics dishing out US$775,000 to the top three men and women, who left with the most money?
Haughey’s two third-place finishes earned her US$16,000, plus US$5,400 for coming sixth in Singapore. Her reward for sweeping the 200m was another US$10,000 on the pile.
Add US$30,000 to that for coming third overall, and Haughey’s total stood at US$61,400.
The biggest winner overall was American Kate Douglass, who had an extraordinary World Cup and won every single race she entered. Her total prize money was US$184,000
