Swimming World Cup: Kate Douglass prevents Siobhan Haughey completing 100m freestyle sweep
The American’s win confirmed 1st spot for her in the overall rankings, with the Hongkonger third, while Leon Marchand was top male swimmer
Siobhan Haughey has a new rival in the women’s 100 metres freestyle after American Kate Douglass beat her by 0.74 seconds, stopping the Hongkonger from completing a clean sweep of the event at the Swimming World Cup in Singapore on Saturday.
Douglass hit the wall in 50.82 seconds, followed by Haughey with a time of 51.56. Poland’s Katarzyna Wasick was third in 52.04.
Second place in the race for Haughey confirmed that she finished third overall in the women’s World Cup rankings with 160.7 points. Douglass was the overall winner, scoring 178.5 points, while compatriot Regan Smith was second with 178.4.
“My goal here isn’t really to look for any rankings or times, it’s just more to get some racing experiences. And walking away with a third place overall – that’s pretty good,” Haughey said.
“[Douglass] has been having a really great meet, especially this week, [breaking] world records and almost [setting a] world record in the 50 fly, so I knew she was going to be really fast, but I was just swimming my own race.”
Douglass said beating Haughey in the final gave her the confidence to take on the event at the World Championships in Budapest in December.
