Siobhan Haughey was crowned the 200 metres freestyle queen after completing a clean sweep of the event at the Swimming World Cup in Singapore, just moments before world records fell in the men’s 200m medley and the women’s 100m backstroke on Friday.

Haughey touched the wall at the OCBC Aquatic Centre in one minute and 51.80 seconds, followed closely by China’s Yang Junxuan in 1:52.07. In third was Australian Brittany Castelluzzo in 1:53.70.

On Saturday, Haughey will compete in the 100m final as she aims to go unbeaten in both events for the second time in as many years, which should also earn her a top three finish in the competition’s overall rankings.

“The 200 is my favourite event, and throughout each stop [at the World Cup], I wanted to do something different and try and get better,” Haughey said. “Even though the time didn’t really reflect that today, I think I’ve learned a lot.”

And as soon as Haughey stepped out of the pool, US$10,000 richer for completing the sweep, France’s Leon Marchand broke a world record in the men’s 200m medley that had stood for 12 years.

Marchand came home in 1:48.88, almost a second faster than the previous best of 1:49.63 set by American Ryan Lochte. In second was Briton Duncan Scott in 1:51.14, followed by Italy’s Alberto Razzetti in 1:52.99.
