Siobhan Haughey facing ‘major decision’ on future, to take months-long break from swimming
The quadruple Olympic medallist says she needs time away to consider whether she wants to compete at the LA Games in 2028
Siobhan Haughey will take a three- to four-month break at the end of the year to evaluate her future and consider whether she wants to represent Hong Kong at the 2028 Olympics in Los Angeles.
Haughey, who won two bronze medals at the Paris Games this summer, said she faced a “major decision” and wanted to take enough of a break to “figure out what’s best for me”.
The Hongkonger, who turns 27 on Thursday, is currently competing in the Swimming World Cup, which comes to an end in Singapore on Saturday. In December, she will race in the World Aquatics Swimming Championships (25m) in Budapest before taking a break from the sport.
“I’m going to take three to four months off just to do different things, let my body recover and see if I still miss swimming or not,” Haughey said.
“I think the major factor in deciding if I go to LA or not is more if my body can handle another four years of rigorous training. I’m not getting any younger, so it’s just going to get harder from here.”
The 26-year-old, who has two silver and two bronze Olympic medals to her name, said if she did go to her fourth Games it would be because she was confident of still being able to cut it among the world’s best.
