Australian Priscilla Hon sounded just like an authentic Hongkonger when she named a long list of local food she loved in Cantonese after beating Eudice Chong in the opening round at the Prudential Hong Kong Tennis Open on Monday.

Born in Brisbane in 1998, world No 210 Hon got the better of local fan favourite Chong after a one hour, and 28 minutes encounter on centre court at Victoria Park Tennis Stadium, walking away with a 6-3, 6-4 straight-sets win.

Among the 1,800- strong centre court crowd was Hon’s 91-year-old grandmother, who was watching her play in the city for the second straight year.

“She doesn’t leave the house much any more, so it’s really special that it wasn’t too hot today so she could come and watch,” the 26-year-old Hon said. “If I am to play at the night session, she will most probably come and watch too.

“But if I am playing in the afternoon [over the next couple of days], she will decide depending on how she feels after waking up.”

With all her relatives coming from the city, Hon has visited Hong Kong at least twice a year, and the “insanely good” food was one of the things that topped her mind about her second home.
