Haughey’s evening at the SPD Bank Oriental Sports Centre started with bronze in the women’s 50 metres breaststroke, her second medal of the competition.

China’s Tang Qianting won in 28.76 seconds, an Asian record, followed by Italy’s Benedetta Pilato in 29.73, Haughey came home in 29.74, which was a Hong Kong record.

“I feel that the short-course pool is comfortable for me as I’m a swimmer with a bursting style, and I make sure to do my turns and starts the best I can. I think the short course might put less pressure on me,” Tang said.

But Haughey was utterly dominant in the 100m freestyle, leading from start to finish, touching the wall in 51.89. China’s Yang Junxuan was second in 52.11, and Australian Milla Jansen third in 52.43.

“I think I had about 10 minutes in between [each race] but for me, it’s just training and 50 breast is a fun event. It’s a pretty good time, I’m happy with it,” Haughey said.
