Hong Kong’s men’s team were guaranteed their best-ever finish at the World Lacrosse Box Championships after securing their second win in as many matches in New York.
Sunday’s 23-7 victory over Mexico was preceded with a 13-5 triumph against Belgium the previous day and it meant Hong Kong would not finish below 16th out of the 28 competitors even before their final Group B match with Israel.
A win against the team who finished fifth in Canada would ensure Hong Kong reached the playoffs, where they would face play-in winners, reserved for those who finished between ninth and 16th.
In 2019, Hong Kong finished 18th out of 20 teams.
Brandon Lui has been one of the stand-out players from Hong Kong’s team of 23. He only started playing lacrosse last December, but is taking part in his third international box lacrosse tournament.
“We’re here to make a statement,” he said. “Hong Kong lacrosse is here to play.
