It’s Monday, so let’s play the ‘which manager is getting sacked first, game’. Surprisingly, it does not appear to be Sean Dyche, who, in a blow to all Everton fans, has been told his job is safe despite his team throwing away a two-goal lead for the second week running.
Maybe it’s Ange Postecoglou, whose Spurs side have lost at home to Arsenal, again. And you can never count out Manchester United boss Erik Ten Hag, who despite a win over Southampton feels to be only ever one devastating defeat from the sack.
Anyway, that’s just part of what’s been going on this weekend; and with NFL, golf, and some cricketers watching it rain, here’s what happened while you were sleeping.
Tottenham Hot-seat
Everyone’s favourite Aussie, and admittedly it’s a short list, has got the wholesome “mate” thing down pat, but Spurs fans appear to be getting tired of Ange Postecoglou’s schtick.

Fury at losing to an Arsenal team missing both midfield starters in Declan Rice (suspension) and Martin Odegaard (injury) was not helped by the toothless nature of the Spurs’ attack. Boos and match day programmes rained down onto the pitch at the end.
“Really poor, tactically naive, and bang average”, were just some of the politer comments floating around after Gabriel Magalhaes’s 64th minute header settled matters.
Postecoglou talked “bigger picture” and things that were “more important than the finer details” in his post-match press conference. Here’s one detail: Spurs have one win in four league games, and have lost seven of their past 11 straddling this season and last.
Howe’s about that
Newcastle United fought back from a half-time deficit with two long-range strikes in the space of five minutes to beat Wolverhampton Wanderers 2-1 at Molineux and move into third place in the Premier League.
Fabian Schar’s speculative effort took a deflection to draw Newcastle level after Wolves captain Mario Lemina’s 36th-minute goal had put the hosts ahead as they chased a first league success of the season.
Harvey Barnes then thrashed home a spectacular winner five minutes later, to leave Wolves in the bottom three with just a single point from their opening four games.
Newcastle are level with second-placed Arsenal on 10 points, but third on goal difference, and two behind leaders Manchester City.
So long Cowboys

Week two threw up some fun results in the early games in the NFL, not least of which was the Las Vegas Raiders (1-1) scoring 13 unanswered points to beat the Baltimore Ravens 26-23 on a Daniel Carlson field goal with 27 seconds left. The Ravens are 0-2 for the first time since 2015.
Elsewhere, Sam Darnold continued to snub his nose at the New York Jets, and the San Francisco 49ers who made him a back-up last season, leading the Minnesota Vikings to a 23-17 win against the latter, throwing for 268 yards and two touchdowns.
America’s team meanwhile, that’s the Dallas Cowboys for the uninitiated, got back to losing ways, slumping 44-19 at home to the New Orleans Saints. There’s some fun to be had linking the Cowboys to US pysche, but we’ll save that for another time.
Yeah, whatever
Back when games between England and Australia meant something, a game being abandoned because of rain would have been a bit of a disappointment. But the ho, hum nature of international cricket now - especially the God-awful short version - means a T20 match being called off because of precipitation in Manchester, in September, is just an opportunity to point out that the people responsible for scheduling are idiots.
Rain, at Old Trafford, in the ninth month of the year, simply unheard of. For the record, the three-match series ended 1-1, and the two teams will now being a five-match 50-over affair at Trent Bridge on Thursday.
It’s gone way past having too much of a good thing at this point, and ventured into saturation levels that make it almost impossible to care.
The final round

Solheim Cup: Lilia Vu won the decisive half point as the United States beat Europe 15½-12½ to win for the first time since 2017. Leading 10-6 going into the final day’s singles, the US did not have it all their own way in Gainesville, Virginia, with Charley Hull’s 6&4 win over Nelly Korda leading a defiant charge from the defending champions.
Irish Open: You have to wonder if the golfing gods have cursed Rory McIlroy. The Northern Irishman was two up on the back nine and still managed to lose at Royal County Down. Denmark’s Rasmus Hojgaard birdied his last three holes, McIlroy bogeyed two of his last four, and said afterwards he was “unfortunately getting used to it this year”.
LIV Golf Chicago: Jon Rahm ended his first year by closing with a four-under-par 66 to win the final individual LIV event on Sunday and the season points title with its $18 million bonus. Rahm missed a pair of short birdie putts on the back nine that kept Joaquin Niemann and Sergio Garcia in the mix. But holed a 12-foot birdie putt on the 17th hole that gave him a three-shot going to the last at Bolingbrook Golf Course.
