Hong Kong’s most decorated athlete, Siobhan Haughey, said she was still undecided on whether she will represent the city at the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics.
Haughey, who won bronze medals in the women’s 100 metres and 200m freestyle at the Paris Olympics, will be back in the pool next month for the World Aquatics Swimming World Cup in Shanghai, Incheon and Singapore.
But the 27-year-old is not even thinking about 2025 yet, let alone four years down the line.
“I wouldn’t say I’m fully committed to LA yet, I think I’m still trying to see what I want to do in the future,” Haughey told reporters at a meet and greet with fans in a Taikoo shopping centre on Sunday.
“As of right now, I’m just very focused on this year and the short course season.

“What’s going to happen next year? I need a bit more time to think about it. But right now, it’s just all about the short course.”
The short course World Cup, where athletes compete in a 25m pool as opposed to the Olympic-standard 50m, is spread over three weeks, starting in Shanghai on October 18.
The second stop on the tour is Incheon the following week, before the final leg in Singapore starts on October 31, Haughey’s birthday.
The World Cup is a qualifying event for the World Aquatics Swimming Championships in Budapest. At the 2021 world championships, Haughey set the 200m freestyle world record with a time of one minute and 50.31 seconds.
“I’m just focusing more on the World Cup and world championships for this year,” she said. “I think the most important thing for the World Cup is just to have fun and enjoy it and use it as a good preparation for short course worlds.”
Haughey said fans could expect to see her compete in her standard freestyle events as well as others such as breaststroke.
“I’ve been swimming the same events over and over again, and the World Cup is such a fun event that I like to just switch things up,” she said. “Maybe I’ll swim something different every time.
“And you’ll see me in the usual freestyle events, I might venture into a little bit of breaststroke, I’m not quite sure yet, but I’ve entered a bunch of different events so that I can decide when it gets closer.”
Haughey is a freestyle specialist and the long course world champion in the 200m. She also won silver medals at the Tokyo Olympics in the 100m and 200m free.

However, she has previously called the breaststroke her “fun” event and swam it in the 4x100m medley relay in Paris, where Hong Kong finished seventh in their heat.
“We’ve just come off a really long season of three years racing for the Olympics, and yes, I’m starting back into training now, but I think the most important thing is we’re trying to do something different,” she said. “Because it’s so very early on in the season, I can afford to try different things.”
Haughey said the next months of training and competing would be an “experiment” where she tries different things that may be incorporated into her long-term plan.
Her reasoning was so that she could focus on making coming events enjoyable.
“I wouldn’t say there are specific time goals that I want to achieve [at the World Cup or world championships], but mainly just to enjoy getting back into training, getting back into the grind and having fun while I’m doing it,” Haughey said.
“Apart from swimming, I’m doing yoga, Pilates, just different sports, a little bit of running as well, to train different muscle groups and see if there are things that I like that I want to incorporate in the future.”
