Paris Paralympics: boccia gold a ‘dream come true’ for husband and wife Hong Kong duo
Competing in her third Games, Ho Yuen-kei takes women’s individual BC3 title, with partner Lee Wing-kit acting as her ramp operator
Ho Yuen-kei said winning boccia gold at the Paris Paralympics on Monday alongside husband, Lee Wing-kit, had been a “dream come true”.
The Hongkonger grabbed her city’s second gold of the Games on Monday in the women’s individual BC3 final, hours after teammate John Loung had triumphed in the men’s individual BC1 event.
Paris is Ho’s third Paralympics, and she said victory meant so much more because she had “finally done it”.
“I’m so grateful and honoured to have [won] this medal for Hong Kong,” she said. “I do believe everyone who was on that court practises so hard. Each one of them deserves this gold medal. I can’t believe of all [those players], it’s me.”
For Ho, there was extra meaning to winning with Lee, whom she revealed had quit his job to help her realise the dream of becoming a Paralympic champion.
“It’s so special to win this gold with him,” Ho said. “He quit his full-time job as a mathematics teacher at a primary school in Hong Kong a few years ago for us to chase our dream of a Paralympic medal. We are so happy that we have finally achieved our dream.”
