Great Britain men’s head coach Tom Wenham hailed Hong Kong’s “phenomenal” staging of the World Lacrosse Super Sixes, after his team began the three-day tournament with comfortable wins over Philippines and the hosts.

Wenham’s favourites beat Philippines 23-6, before a 28-9 rout of Hong Kong on Friday. Teenager Hugo Peel scored four times in each match, and there were nine goals for Ben Page-Laycock against Hong Kong.

The Great Britain squad only arrived in the city in the early hours of Thursday morning having travelled via Beijing, and Wenham admitted his side’s preparation “was not ideal”.

“The tournament format means it might come down to goal difference, so we have to play from the first whistle to the last and be ruthless,” Wenham said.

“But the set-up is superb, and the organisers have done a fantastic job.”

Hong Kong head coach Bob Snider echoed Wenham’s opinion, and at least that gave the hosts something to smile about after they began their day with a painful 18-17 defeat by Philippines, after leading 16-15 in the final quarter. The second game was never close.
