Fresh from her historic performance at the Asian Games, Siobhan Haughey has shattered two more records, this time at a World Cup meet in Berlin.

The Hong Kong swimmer – who won six medals at the Games – put down the fastest 100 metres freestyle time of the year in the German capital, winning in 52.02 seconds on Sunday.

Quicker than her silver medal-winning time at the World Championships in July, Haughey broke the World Cup record of 52.34, set in 2019 by Australia’s Cate Campbell.

A week after winning gold in Hangzhou with an Asian record of 52.17, Haughey lowered that by more than a tenth of a second, putting her in sight of Sarah Sjostrom’s world record of 51.71, set in 2017.

Sjostrom and Campbell both raced in Berlin, with Campbell finishing second in 53.26 and the Swede third in 53.39.

“I really didn’t know what I was expecting,” Haughey said. “It wasn’t a best time for me in the 100 free, so this was a good surprise. My goal is to get faster every stop, who knows, maybe by the end of the series I will swim a 51.”
