The 25-year-old earned the fifth medal of a fruitful Games for her personally, being edged out in a close duel with Chinese favourite Zhang Yufei.

It took a Games record to beat her, too, as Zhang touched first in 24.26 seconds, with Haughey also inside the old record in clocking a personal and city best of 24.34.

“The 50m free wasn’t really my main event, it’s still the 100 and 200m free,” Haughey said. “I hadn’t really trained specifically for the 50m but I knew my conditioning was quite good.

“I hoped I could swim my best time. I am happy to break the [Hong Kong] record, of course.”

Second place added to Haughey’s golds this week in her favoured 100m and 200m, along with bronzes in the 50m breaststroke and the 4x100m freestyle relay.
