Hong Kong swimming starlet Siobhan Haughey flexed her muscles in her favoured 200 metres freestyle at the Asian Games, winning her heat to qualify fifth fastest for Monday night’s final.
A day after earning two bronzes on Sunday, in the 50 metres breaststroke and 4x100m freestyle relay, Haughey returned to Hangzhou Olympic Sports Centre Aquatic Sports Arena for her main event.
In lane 4 of the third and final heat, the 25-year-old established a solid lead from the 50-metre mark to win in two minutes, 0.75 seconds. That was 1.85 seconds behind the fastest overall time in the heats, by Li Bingjie of China, who won gold in the 2018 Asian Games.
Her fellow Hongkonger Tinky Ho Nam-wai, who swam next to Haughey in the heat, clocked two minutes, 3.71 seconds to miss out on the final.
Haughey will get the chance bring home her third medal of these Games in Monday’s final at 7.48pm.
Also securing places in Monday night’s finals were veteran Stephanie Au Hoi-shun, Ian Ho Yentou and the city’s men’s 4x200m freestyle relay team.
