Siobhan Haughey and her Hong Kong teammates began their World Aquatics Championships in Japan with a city record in the women’s 4x100 metres freestyle relay – but it was still not enough to get them to the final on day one in the pool.

The quartet of Haughey, Camille Cheng Lily-mei, Tam Hoi-lam and Stephanie Au Hoi-shun came fifth in their heat in three minutes, 39.93 seconds as swimming events got under way on Sunday.

That was one hundredth of a second under their previous best – set by a team featuring three of the same swimmers, in Haughey, Au and Cheng, at the 2014 Asian Games. It placed them 12th overall among the 18 teams in Fukuoka.

Haughey will swim in the heats of the individual 200m freestyle on Tuesday.
