Road to Paris Olympics: Siobhan Haughey sets another Hong Kong record, hits 2024 Games ‘A’ qualifying mark in 50m free
- The Hongkonger posts a time of 24.56 seconds in the final of the 50m freestyle at the Mare Nostrum Swim Tour meet in France
- Time achieves the ‘A’ standard for 2024 Games but is not enough to secure gold, with Sweden’s Sarah Sjostrom coming home comfortably ahead in 24.02
Siobhan Haughey has set another Hong Kong record in the 50 metres freestyle, finishing the distance in 24.56 seconds on the opening day of the Mare Nostrum Swim Tour in the south of France.
The time was also enough to meet the “A” qualifying standard for next year’s Paris Olympics, but not enough for Haughey to win the race in Canet-en-Roussillon, with Sweden’s Sarah Sjostrom coming home comfortably ahead in 24.02.
Haughey’s time bettered her previous record of 24.59, which she swam in May 2019.
Meeting the Olympic qualifying standard means Haughey has now hit the mark in four distances, having previously done so for the 100m, 200m and 400m.
Haughey has broken seven individual Hong Kong national records so far in her career. In addition to the 50m free, Haughey is the record holder in the 100m free, 200m free, 400m free, 100m butterfly, 200 individual medley and 50 breaststroke.
